At the hospital, John thanks Christy for coming so quickly. Christy replies that Dr. Beckett said it was important. John tells Christy that blood samples from Douglas's autopsy have given them reason to investigate even further into his death. Darryl adds that they found high levels of alkaloids in Douglas's bloodstream. Alkaloids are not run-of-the-mill, and the concentration in Douglas's system was so intense, they had no explanation for it. Christy asks what that means. John explains that Kelsey, who is an expert in hematology, ran a check on the particulars of these alkaloids and found something quite peculiar. Darryl says it seems that Douglas ingested a lethal dosage of an herb, probably in concentrated form, just before the attack which led to the cardiac arrest. Frankie is still upset that Christy kept Douglas's autopsy from her. Christy says that she can't talk about blood, and she doesn't like to think about what they're doing to Douglas's body. Frankie says she was very shocked by the news. Christy asks if Frankie doesn't approve, and Frankie says that's not it. Christy asks what it is, then. Frankie understands Douglas's generosity in leaving his body to science so that maybe the doctors could find a cure for somebody else. At the hospital, Kelsey tells John that Spader thinks they could be open to a negligence suit because Darryl and Douglas Carson were battling about Douglas's treatment before Douglas died, and that Douglas adamantly opposed medical solutions as opposed to holistic treatments. John asks if Spader knows about Frankie being a friend of Douglas's and supporting his living will and his right to die, and John realizes that all Spader sees is the possibility of a negligence suit. Kelsey agrees and says that Spader wasn't too kind in his opinion of Darryl either, because this is Darryl's first case since being put on staff, and it had a postmortem with unexpected results. Darryl interrupts then with the results of Douglas's blood workup from the medical examiner. He asks Kelsey, whose specialty is hematology, to look at the number. The alkaloid levels are outrageously high. None of the drugs Douglas was taking had any alkaloids in them. When John comes to pick up Gregory, who's still sleeping, Frankie tells him to let Gregory sleep for a few more minutes and asks what John wanted to see Cass about. John wants to see Cass because he's the Carsons' lawyer. John tells Frankie that they don't have all the details yet so he doesn't want her to overreact, but Douglas Carson did not die of natural causes. Frankie points out that Douglas had a terminal heart condition. When John mentions the postmortem, Frankie is shocked. She says that in a case like Douglas's, there wouldn't have been an autopsy unless someone from the family requested it. She realizes Christy requested an autopsy just as Christy comes breezing in loaded down with shopping bags complaining about the stores in town.
